About the Event

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Cost of Healing in Silence: Navigating Racial Trauma and the Call for Culturally Responsive Care offers a critical, interdisciplinary examination of how systemic racism, historical exclusion, and cultural mistrust shape the mental health experiences of Black individuals and families in urban communities. Blending clinical insight, narrative inquiry, and policy analysis, Ashley McGirt centers the lived realities of Black families who have been underserved and often harmed by traditional mental health systems.

Drawing from trauma-informed practice, public health frameworks, and culturally responsive care models, the book interrogates why Black communities are frequently misdiagnosed, under-treated, and pathologized, while simultaneously expected to demonstrate endurance without adequate support. McGirt introduces a strengths-based lens that moves beyond deficit narratives, emphasizing fortitude, perseverance, and collective survival while naming the structural conditions that make “healing in silence” a necessary yet costly adaptation.
