The Origin Story.

People often ask: "why Café con Libros? Isn't this a Black-Owned Bookstore?

They also ask? "why an intersectional feminist bookstore?

Here's our answer.

Our 
Story

Inspired by the Toni Morrison quote "If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it" owner and founder Kalima DeSuze, MSW opened Café con Libros as an intersectional feminist bookstore and coffeeshop in Brooklyn, NY.

In 2015, Kalima became serious about moving her ideas into action. She asked, “what/where do I spend the most amount of money?” It was clear: books and travel. And, not just any book; books written by, for and about women.

 

After a trip to Ethiopia, where she witnessed the magic of a community coffee shop, she instantly knew she would open a bookstore and coffeeshop.

 

The doors opened in December 2017.

Café con Libros, Bk prioritizes the voices, images and stories of women, girls, trans, non-binary and folx. Over 98% of our books and events are by us, about us & for us.
