About Alaso

Nègès Mawon is pleased to present the first issue of the Alaso journals. These journals will be released on November 18 , day of commemoration of the Battle of Vertières in Haiti and November 24th in francophone West Africa, North America and Europe.

Alaso is a space for feminist expression and dialogue to encourage the production of critical thought, debate and analysis that make feminist thought accessible in different formats and modes of dissemination.

For this first issue we chose the heart of our struggles: resistance. Resistance to marginalization, despair, violence, and erasure. This resistance is reflected in our collective struggles but also in our daily commitment to stand up and fight for more freedom, justice, and joy.

Alaso is a trilingual project, available in 2 editions: Haitian Creole / French and Haitian Creole / English.

Souzen Joseph is a journalist, a presenter at TNH ( National Televison of Haiti) and a member of the Haitian feminist organization Nègès Mawon. She wrote an article for the first issue focusing on the resistance of the Haitian feminism movement.

Corine Bond is the illustrator of Alaso. She was born in Haiti, and raised in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Corine is a Graphic designer with experience in design research for social change. She studied in Vancouver at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She returned to Haiti hoping to work on social change projects.

Nadine Mondestin is one of Alaso translator (English - Haitian Creole - French) is an independent researcher and translator, specializing in the humanities and the visual and performing arts. She has been a speaker at scientific events such as the annual gatherings of the Caribbean Studies Association, the Haitian Studies Association and the international Congress of Feminist Research in the Francophonie. Her translations have appeared in scholarly journals such as Small Axe, and online publications including Global Voices and IPS News. Follow her activities at http://proteancreatives.net.

Fania Noël is the one who conceived, and piloted Alaso for Nègès Mawon. She is the publication director.

Fania Noel was born in Haiti and grew up in France, she is an Afro-feminist organizer and writer. She is currently a PhD candidate in sociology at The New School for Social Research working on Black Studies, Black feminisms and capitalism studies. She is the co-founder of the political journal on intersectionality Revue AssiégéEs. After 5 years as a member of the France-based Black feminist collective Mwasi-Collectif, she joined Black Feminist Future‘s Board of Directors. Her second book "Et maintenant, le pouvoir. Un horizon politique Afroféministe" ( Power, Now! Afrofeminist political possibilities) will be published in march 2022 by Cambourakis Editions. For 2 years, she was the host of the AyiboPost podcast on women and feminism in Haiti “Medam yo Ranse”.
